Stewart Sargent

Stewart Sargent
Services Development Engineer, Marlborough District Council, NEW ZEALAND

Stewart W Sargent has more than 30 yrs of Professional Engineering and Computer Science experience including:  project, practice and technical management; and modelling studies.  He has worked in 4 countries and travelled extensively [including a 2.5 yr trans-global trip by road and ship thru 40 countries].  He has: been a director and branch manager in large consulting engineering practice,  operated his own Technical Computing consulting practice, worked as an IS Manager,  and in Local Government. His engineering includes all piped waters, plus irrigation, rivers, hydrology and groundwater. He has developed and used modelling, mathematical & mapping tools all through his career including: systems engineering for a Canadian Hydro system,  modelling for the entire city of Calgary (in the days when you first had to write the software),  dynamic and linear programming for operations research, modelling, modellin  river system in Asia,  water systems in Australia,  & close to 100  water supply, irrigation, and collection systems  in New Zealand. He has also worked as GIS Consultant in Thailand & has development financial models and management systems for small business.  He has some challenging and encouraging views on professional responsibility, and the place [& misplacement ] of modelling. Stewart is a member of the NZ Institute of Professional Engineers and the NZ Computer Society (and previously;  the same in Australia, & Professional Engineering in Canada).  [He is also holds a commercial marine licence and when not engineering water – sails on water, in a large sailing catamaran].  He has written numerous papers on philosophy, management and application of computer technologies. A recent paper relating to mathematically analysing loading sequences  for waste water system engineering, won a bronze award for modelling and a silver award for Hynds Paper of the Year from the New Zealand Water and Waste Assoc (NZWWA).
